Corey Lyons isn’t just a key part of Glenelg Football Club’s success. He’s become one of its defining figures.
Since arriving at the Bay in 2022, Corey has brought a blend of composure, work ethic and leadership that has helped drive the Tigers to back-to-back SANFL premierships in 2023 and 2024. Now in 2025, the hunger for a third consecutive flag is alive and well. This season, he’s chasing history alongside his brother, former AFL midfielder Jarryd Lyons.
Corey’s path to Glenelg began with the Brisbane Lions, where he was drafted in 2016. He quickly developed valuable skills in work ethic, organisation, persistence and resilience that have shaped both his sporting career and professional journey. In 2022, he made the move to South Australia to join the Tigers, bringing with him a calm, competitive presence that has become a hallmark of Glenelg’s midfield.
From day one at Glenelg, Corey made an impression. His clean ball use, footy IQ and elite decision-making quickly saw him cement a spot in the midfield group. But beyond his ability to win the footy, it’s his leadership that has stood out. He earned a place in the club’s leadership group and has become a steady presence both on and off the field.
The 2023 Grand Final was a standout. Against a relentless Sturt side, Corey gathered 28 disposals and kicked a crucial goal just before halftime. It set the tone for what would become a breakthrough flag for the Tigers!
And the momentum didn’t stop there. In 2024, the Tigers did it again. Another premiership, another season of consistency from Corey, and another reminder of the club’s winning culture.
Now, with 2025 underway, Glenelg has its sights set on something rare: a three-peat. Few clubs in modern SANFL history have pulled it off. But this season has an added layer of meaning. Corey is now joined by his older brother Jarryd, who signed on with Glenelg after a decorated AFL career spanning over a decade with Adelaide, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
The Lyons brothers had previously shared the field only once in a trial match during their time at Brisbane. Now they’re chasing a SANFL premiership side by side. It’s a surreal and special moment for both of them, and a thrilling story for footy fans across South Australia.
